The “Get PerSOULnal” Interview with Jonathan Luckett
Disilgold: What time do you awake normally every morning? J.L.- I usually wake up between 7 and 8:30, depending on what time I went to bed the night before.
Disilgold: What is your writing fuel in the morning?
J.L. Actually, I have a hard time writing in the morning. It’s like I need to get through my emails and IMs, go online to read the news, etc…before I can actually settle down to write.
Disilgold: What early morning rituals have followed for many years?
J.L.-What I mentioned above—getting the small stuff like emails and IMs out of the way.
Disilgold: What are your favorite foods to snack on while writing?
J.L.-Herbal tea, raisins, crackers, and fruit.
Disilgold: Do you watch television or listen to the radio when you’re writing, and if so, what do you watch or listen too mostly?
J.L.- Not tv, but music—always music. I need to have something in the back ground to help me write.
Disilgold: What is your favorite book of all time? I honestly don’t have a favorite book of all time—I truly enjoyed The DaVinci Code; I love James Patterson’s novels. One of my favorite novels is Eric Jerome Dickey’s The Other Woman.
Disilgold: What is your favorite magazine of all time?
J.L.-There was a black men’s magazine that was out a number of years ago called Code. It was the epitome of cool…
Disilgold: Do you have an exercise regimen to suggest for busy writers?
J.L.- I try to get in three days a week of spinning. The operative word here is “try!”
Disilgold: What is your everyday outfit?
J.L.- Jeans and a tee shirt or sweater.
Disilgold: What is your pet peeve?
J.L.-People who don’t call you back.
Disilgold: If you could inspire a child, what would you say?
J.L.-Keep pushing, no matter what someone tells you.
Disilgold: What is your favorite motto?
J.L.- My character Trey from How Ya Livin’ and The Mating Game is fond of saying: “Work hard, play even harder!”
Disilgold: What is your favorite time to put your writing pen down and rest?
J.L.-I put my pen down when I’m tired (mentally and physically) or when I’ve come to the close of a chapter or scene.
Disilgold: Have you traveled anywhere besides your hometown and if so, where?
J.L.-I’ve traveled extensively throughout the United States and to some foreign countries.
Disilgold: Where is your dream vacation?
J.L.- Laying on the beach during the day in Jamaica, partying in the evening to Reggae music.
Disilgold: What do you particularly like about the literary world today?
J.L.-Black fiction is on the rise while the sales of all other genres are flat.
Disilgold: If you could leave one word of advice to people in general, what would it be?
J.L.-Find your passion and pursue it—it’s better than sex (okay, at least as good as…)!
