Houstonians to be honored with prestigious NAACP award

Los Angeles – Houston natives and award-winning producers JeCaryous Johnson and Gary Guidry will receive the prestigious NAACP 2007 Trailblazer Award.

Johnson and Guidry are being recognized for their numerous contributions to the entertainment industry. As the co-founders of I’m Ready Productions, a Houston-based national touring and productions company, the pair was praised by the NAACP for consistently bringing quality stage productions to the urban theater-going audience. Members wrote that with the success of Maintenance Man, Friends and Lovers and Cheaters, Johnson and Guidry displayed a unique ability to adapt best-selling contemporary novels into nationally sold-out stage plays, which was remarkable and worthy of our recognition.

The NAACP went on to say that the talented duo had opened doors for many of the best and brightest talent from the worlds of film, television and music to transition into theater.

Johnson and Guidry recently held their latest production, Men, Money & Gold Diggers before sold-out shows at the Hobby Center, and they say that this honor is validation for all their hard work.

We basically try to introduce, and in some cases re-introduce, the black theatre to audiences. We try to show that black audiences will come see quality shows. We proved this by filling up the Hobby Center – after critics told us no black performance could do well in a place like the Hobby Center. So for our efforts to be recognized by an organization such as the NAACP is extremely rewarding, Johnson said.

Previous recipients of this award include August Wilson, Melba Moore, Woodie King, Paul Winfield, and Tyler Perry, among others.  The NAACP Theatre Awards will be held at the Directors Guild of America Theatre, in Los Angeles, California on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007.

The proceeds from the Award Show support NAACP programs that serve the youth in our community.  This year’s honorees include legendary actress Ruby Dee (2007 Lifetime Achievement Award), multitalented entertainer Usher Raymond (2007 Spirit Award), and pharmaceutical giant Abbott Laboratories (2007 Community Service Award).
