The 1st Essence Magazine Awards “celebrated outstanding established and emerging African-American authors of 2007 on February 7, 2008 at the LeParker Meridien in New York City among the who’s who in publishing and multi-industries. (Listing of guests spotted to be listed soon.)
Hosted by Hoda Koth and Dr. Ian Smith, with special presentations such as by children books presenter Victoria Rowell and Cara Robinson of Avon and Yolanda Kirby of State Farm, just some of the night’s big winners, were T. D. Jakes presented by Michelle Ebanks and Terry McMillan, receiving “The Lifetime Achievement Award” for fine works such as Disappearing Acts, The Interruption of Everything, Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. As an undergrad, she won Essence Magazine’s first college essay contest for her work, Black Men and Women: Are We Closer Together of Further Apart.
Other winners among award categories like Best Poetry, Current Affairs Literature, Children Books, Memoir, Non-Fiction, Inspiration, Fiction and Storyteller of the Year Award Recipient were An Unbroken Agony by Randall Robinson, Dausfuskie Island by Heanne Moutoussamy Ashe, Marvelous Wind by Troy Cle, Supreme Discomfort by Michael Fletcher, How Strong Women Pray by Bonnie St. John, and L.A. Banks.
The Essence Literary Awards was produced by Essence Magazine’s Senior Book Editor, Patrik Henry Bass, who charged the ceremony with Essence Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Angela Burt Murray. This year’s launch theme was “Save Our Libraries” which resulted in sponsorship for the world renown Countee Cullen Branch dedicated to perserving Afican-American literature. More sponsors like State Farm® 50 Million Pound Challenge lead by Dr. Ian Smith, Breezes, and Nuvo solidified another literary award show making history on the onset of the millennium in celebration of the African-American literary community.
